![]() Magna -- On November 3 residents of Magna will be voting for a new board of trustees for the Magna Water District. Five men: Hank Johnson, Dan Peay, Steve Prokopis, Mick Sudbury and Dan Tuttle are running for the two available seats on the board. The two men elected will join Douglas S. Bezzant to create the new Board of Directors. Challenges facing the new board will include improving relationships with employees and implementing the secondary water system. There has been some confusion among residents as to where they will be voting for the new board. There are three locations for voting: Lakeridge Elementary School, Brockbank Junior High and Copper Hills Elementary. It is important to note that these elections are separate from the Granite bond vote which will take place at Cyprus High School. To find out where to place your vote you can call the Magna Water District at (801) 250-2118. The two incumbents running for re-election are Hank Johnson and Dan Tuttle. Tuttle who is in his eighth year on the board would like to put a secondary water system in place for irrigation so that water for lawns and farming does not take away from Magna’s drinking water. Tuttle says that one of his main goals is to gather funding for this system through the State of Utah and the United States Congress. Currently there is no EPA standard for how much arsenic or perchlorates are in drinking water so the current board has set that at zero. Tuttle says that this puts a hardship on the community when perchlorates and arsenic are in drinking water and they don’t receive any help in ridding the drinking supply. As a current member of the Board of Directors Hank Johnson co-establishes and co-approves the district’s budget. Johnson is a native from Magna and currently serves Magna Township as a Deputy Sheriff for Salt Lake County. His work on the board includes meeting with Utah delegates in Washington, D.C. to help improve Magna Water District. Dan Peay points out that the water district is moving upward and that as a trustee his main goal would be to facilitate the district’s growth. Peay would also like to see consistency in the voting process and increased public awareness brought to the board’s activities. Peay, is a member of the Magna Community Council and says that his current civic duties give him the tools he needs to be a trustee for the Magna Water District. Steve Prokopis would like to bring value to the community in a way that positively impacts everyone. Prokopis puts an emphasis Magna and would like to, “(I) would like to attract and embrace growth in the district.” Prokopis would also like to expand the secondary water system to foster the growth that Magna will see and is seeing. He says that the way to do this is through proper allocation of funds and improved relations with employees. Prokopis was born and raised and Magna and is currently works as a paramedic and a fire captain for Magna Station #102. Mick Sudbury is a strong believer that if you, “take care of employees that they will take will take care of the company.” This sentiment echoed throughout the changes that Sudbury would like to see brought to the water district. Sudbury says that he would like to give employees of the water district a voice on the board and improve communications between the board and employees. Sudbury is a local business owner of Sudbury Cleaning and lifelong Magna Resident. Only registered users can write comments.
